Up to 10 leaders of communes and a forest management board in the central province of Nghe An face dismissal and punishment for their involvement in destroying local forests.
The information was confirmed by authorities of Quy Hop District.
The deforestation in Nam Son Commune
The ten people included Nguyen Tien Canh, head of the district’s the Information and Education board. Meanwhile, the other nine people include two party secretaries of Bac Son and Nam Son communes; five leaders of Nam Son Commune and two officials of the district forest management board.
According to the conclusion of local authorities, some of these accused have to take responsibility for their lax management over the forest protection in Nam Son and Bac Son communes, while the others have been accused of cutting down trees in favour of cash crop plantations.
After the investigation, Quy Hop District’s police have decided to prosecute the case and evidence is being collected for the prosecution.
A large amount of wood illegally logged in Nam Son Commune
The deforestation has happened in Nam Son and Bac Son communes since March this year. Dozens of hectares of forest have been destroyed and used for growing other kinds of trees, particularly acacia.
By late February this year, a large amount of wood was illegally logged in Tuong Duong District.
