Tens of people in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai were hit
by landslides on September 5, resulting from days of torrential rain.

Twelve people were wounded after being partially buried when they were
illegally exploiting gold near a mountain in Minh Luong commune, Van
Ban district.

On the same day, the office of the
district’s Tham Duong communal People’s Committee collapsed due to
another landslide. No deaths were reported.

Heavy
downpours over the last few days have caused serious floods in the
province, killing four, injuring 11 and leaving ten missing.

According to preliminary statistics, in total there have been 11
dealths, serious road-blockages, destroyed houses and flooded rice
fields in four northern provinces of Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Lang Son and
Lao Cai.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister
Nguyen Tan Dung has issued instruction for northern localities to
closely monitor the situation and be proactive in evacuating residents
living near flood-affected areas.

Local authorities
have also been urged to assist residents in any way they can so that
they can resume their normal lives without delay.

The PM also ordered relevant ministries and agencies to protect
embankments, hydropower plants and electricity lines as well as ensure
food supply to cope with the aftermath of the floods.-VNA
