The Thai Government pledged on November 3 to bring peace to the
Muslim-dominated southern region within a year despite delays in peace
talks.

The government is undertaking maximum
efforts, Thai Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan told reporters, blaming
the insurgent forces for attacks in retaliation of recent arrests by the
authorities.

According to Thai police, the suicide bombings in Pattani province on October 31 claimed a life and injured at least two.

Since January 2004, violence has persisted in southern Thailand,
especially in Muslim-dominated areas, including Pattani, Narathiwat and
four wards in Songkhla. So far, 5,900 people have been killed, and
10,600 have been injured.

Former Yingluck
Shinawatra’s government and the insurgent group BRN launched talks last
year, but the negotiations stalled in October 2013 after only five
rounds.-VNA
