Seven Cambodians were killed in the first five months of this year,
down 65 percent compared with 20 deaths over the same period last year.
According to an official report announced by the
Cambodian Government on July 8 that in the Jan-May period, the country
reported 42 landmine accidents, a 5 percent decrease compared with 44
accidents recorded at the same period last year.
addition, landmines injured 51 others, down 36 percent compared with 80
injured people at the same period last year, it said.
The report said that from 1979 to May this year, up to 19,669 people
were killed by landmines and 44,592 others were injured.
Cambodia is one of the world’s worst countries suffered from
landmines. An estimated 4-6 million landmines and other munitions have
been left over from three decades of war and internal conflicts that
ended in 1998.
By 2012, the country had defused and destroyed about 3 million landmines and unexploded ordnances.-VNA
