Vietnamese tennis players will compete in the Davis Cup’s Asia/Oceania zone, Group 3 to be held in Hanoi in April.

The team includes Ly Hoang Nam, Trinh Linh Giang, Pham Minh Tuan and Le Quoc Khanh.

Players will begin training in HCM City in early March guided by coaches Truong Quoc Bao and Tanveer Ashiq of Pakistan, before leaving for Hanoi to familiarise themselves with the weather and local courts.

The southern province of Tay Ninh-born Nam will be the key player for the Vietnamese team in singles and doubles.

Nam is world No 471 and won the boy’s doubles title of the 2015 Wimbledon Championship with Indian partner Sumit Nagal, becoming the first Vietnamese tennis player to win a Grand Slam.

The Davis Cup in Hanoiwill feature nine teams, namely Syria, Arab Saudi, Qatar, Pacific Oceania, Malaysia, Kuwait, Jordan, Cambodia and the hosts Vietnam.

The teams will be divided into two groups. The best two teams in each group will compete in the semi-finals to determine the best two nations to be promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group 2 next year.

Vietnam dropped to Group 3 last year after losing 5-0 to Iran in the play-off in Isfahan City, Iran.
