The 24-year-old runner and hurdler from the northern province of Nam Dinh won a gold medal in the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships in the women’s 400m hurdle. She also won a total of six gold medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the 400m, 400m hurdle and 400m relay.

Huyen was the country’s top medal hopeful at the upcoming Asian Games (ASIAD) in August.

According to the Viet Nam Athletics Federation, Quach Thi Lan will replace Huyen in the 400m and 400m hurdle in the ASIAD, while young ace Nguyen Thi Hang will replace Huyen in the 4x400m hurdle.

“I got married last year. I intended to compete at the upcoming ASIAD and then start a family. But because of my unscheduled pregnancy, I must stop running to become a mother,” said Huyen.

After retirement, Huyen will be a coach of a junior athletics team in Nam Dinh.

“It’s a pity that I won’t be devoted to Vietnamese sport anymore, but I am very happy to become a mother,” said Huyen.
