Vietnam were defeated 0-8 by Australia on April 10 in the team’s second match in the final round of the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup held in Amman, Jordan.
Vietnam’s starting line-up had some changes compared to the opener, as Khong Thi Hang was the goalkeeper and defender Nguyen Thi Xuyen was named as team captain.
With a line-up of highly skilled players, Australia took control of the game right from the first few minutes of the game with high passes and fast dribbles along the sides.
Kyah Simon scored the first goal for Australia in the eighth minute from a favourable pass of May Kerr. About 10 minutes later, Alanna Kennedy doubled the score with a header.
Meanwhile, Vietnam launched continuous attacks with the hope of narrowing the gap, which resulted in weaknesses in the defend line.
Logarzo and Van Egmond seized the chances and expanded the score for the Australian squad in the 21st and 27th minute. The first half ended 5-0 for Australia as May Kerr scored the fifth goal in the 44th minute.
After the break, May Kerr again scored a goal in the 51st minute with a straight shot following a pass of Ellie Carpenter from the right wing, raising the score to 6-0.
In the remaining time of the second half, Vietnam made many attempts to gain control of the ball. However, Australia continued to find the net in the 71st minute and five minutes later with two goals both attributed to Hayley Raso.
Vietnam managed to maintain the score with their solid defence in the last minutes of the match.
In an earlier match of Group B, defending champion Japan had a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Korea (RoK).
Vietnam is scheduled to face the RoK in their last match in Group B on April 12 afternoon (local time).
With two losses, the Vietnamese players must win their last game if they want to achieve a top-three finish in Group B to advance to the playoff match against Group A’s third-place team for the fifth World Cup ticket.
Earlier, the team finished a ten-day training camp in Germany, with one win and one draw with the local women’s football club.-VNA
