Walk in the footsteps of early Old Quarter inhabitants

HA NOI (VNS)— If you’ve always wanted to hear the sounds of old Ha Noi, the city’s first Soundwalk offers a chance to walk in the footsteps of the Old Quarter’s historical inhabitants.

Starting at St Joseph’s Cathedral, 40 Nha Chung Street, participants equipped with general package radio services (GPRS) handphones will pass through Ha Noi’s ancient streets – Hang Gai, Hang Vai, Bat Dan – and end at Dong Xuan Market. During the journey, you can stop anywhere to hear sounds like ca tru (ceremonial singing), popular in the early 20th century.

The 60-90 minute walk takes place on Saturday and is part of the the Ha Noi Sound Stuff Festival and Locative Audio, a project started in 2011 by researchers and musicians at the University of Manchester.-VNS
