World of sound tour is experimental electronic music tour which marks the collaboration between acclaimed musician Vu Nhat Tan and talented young musician Nguyen Hong Giang, including an impressive 5 programs in Hanoi with the participation of some Guest artists, who are the leading artists in contemporary music such as Dee.F, Dao Anh Khanh, Tri Minh, potential young artists such as Nguyen Do Minh Quan and Nguyen Hong Nhung.

WORLD OF SOUNDS PLAY 1 + 2 | Experimental electronic music:

– 2 nights in Hanoi Rock City will be the two most innovative nights with outstanding artist Nguyen Hong Giang – a young talented and with full enlightenment. The evening will be filled electronic and experimental music sound under the magic hands of the artist and musician Dee.F, remarkable style of Vu Nhat Tan, and new sound creations of young and promising artist Nguyen Hong Giang.

– The combination of music, sound, noise, performance and vocal of top performers Dao Anh Khanh will give listeners the wild enchanting, under the smooth flow of DJ Tri Minh and colorful flow of musician Vu Nhat Tan, which brought the audience to peel the sweet layers of performing arts and music improvisation, especially when there is also performance by Nguyen Hong Giang – a seeker of new words of music.

– Experimental music is not something strange if we have a chance to discover the beauty of the sound behind it, when we understand the artist standing next to music instrument. At PLAY 5, viewers have the opportunity to learn more about electronic music through the sharing of musician Vu Nhat Tan about the work of experimental music artists. What is more, young artist Nguyen Hong Giang will directly answer questions about experimental music and electronic music, the music system software on computers, and is very willing to instruct the technique and skills in playing and composing music to audience. Especially young artist Nguyen Hong Nhung will represent one piece of the generative MIDI, based on random results.

VU NHAT TAN

Vietnamese composer of experimental orchestral/chamber/piano, and electro/computer multimedia works that have been performed in Asia, Europe and elsewhere. Tan studied piano at Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi, where he earned a certificate in 1987 and degrees in secondary education in composition and musicology in 1991. He then studied composition and musicology there from 1991-95 and graduated with his BMus. He later studied computer music and new music at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne in 2000-01, on a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. In addition, he studied composition with Chinary Ung at the University of California at San Diego in 2002 as a guest student His honors include Third Prize in the composition for traditional instruments competition of the Vietnam Composers Association in Hanoi (1992, for Chamber Piece for Traditional Vietnamese Instruments [withdrawn]) and First Prize in the Saint-German-en-Laye competition (1995, for Ky Uc – Memory). He has also received four prizes from the Vietnam Composers Association (1998, for Ngu Doi Dang Dan – Interplay of Five Instruments; 2001, for Phac Thao 2000 – Outline 2000; 2002, for Nhip Don Nhip Kep – Simple Meter, Compound Meter; 2003, for Ao Don Ao Kep – Four-Part Vietnamese Dress). He received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council (2002), which enabled him to research contemporary music and ethnomusicology in the USA.

His music has been performed in Australia, Cambodia, China, France, Germany, Mongolia, Switzerland, the USA, and Vietnam, including at the Roaring Hoofs Festival in Ulaanbaatar (2000), the Louisiana Festival of Contemporary Music in Baton Rouge (2002), the Totally Huge New Music Festival in Perth (2003), and the Asian Music Festival in Tokyo (2003). He is also active in electro/computer music multimedia performances . He created the multimedia performance projects Dem Dai – Sleepless Night (2001), on a grant from the Arts Network Asia in Singapore, Chao HoiAn (2002), on a grant from the British Council in Hanoi, KhaT (2003), Space of Traditional and Contemporary Music in China (2003), on a grant from the Arts Network Asia, and Pito (2004), on a grant from the Ford Foundation. He has performed on numerous occasions as a pianist and sáo tre (bamboo flute)-player in contemporary and improvisational music in Australia, China and Vietnam. Furthermore, he gave improvisational music concerts and workshops in Hue in 2004. He has lectured on composition and musicology at Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi since 1995. He has also guest-lectured on Vietnamese music in Australia and Vietnam.

NGUYEN HONG GIANG

Nguyen Hong Giang is a Vietnamese experimental / noise musician . Giang was born in Saigon in 1991 . He studied 11 years classical piano in Ho Chi Minh Conversatory of music at the age of 10 . Actived in 2009 , he created harsh noise project name “Writher” and produced “pure” noise, using microphone and various electronic device . Giang became interested in making noise music when he heard the distortion guitar sound , screaming vocal sounds from black metal . And the world in RPG video game , a noisy life in Vietnam is a big influence of his music .

In 2013, he developed his music in many different ways , experience with sounds and structures , combine noise with digital sound from software computer, his music theme always change and don’t have any limit.

Giang has also been working in the other area of music such as classical , hiphop , metal , rock , pop , dance, art installations . He also plays keyboard and produces music in a post rock band ” Time Keeper “.

Giang has done many live solo performs with his original music . Played severals improvisational electronic music concerts in Saigon and Hanoi. The first concert he played when he was 16 years old is ” Hanoi New Music Meeting ” – an international experimental contemporary music festival.

Feb 2015, Giang has invited to perform in “Asian Meeting Festival” in Japan, play in Tokyo and Kyoto with 21 international artist. Artistic Director by Otomo Yoshihide, curator by Dj sniff, Yuen Chee Wai.

DEE.F

Dee.F is the talented artist in electronic music. He received certificates from Pointblank, Domdom, Vietnam Malmö Academy of Music, as well as performed in national shows including Kobalt Works (Belgium), Delicate Decibel (Thailand), Bass Kitchen (Taiwan). He has been well known via performances in Hanoi Sound Stuff, Hanoi Rock City, Domdom and Dao Anh Khanh studio. He is also co-founder of Hanoi Rock City – 1 of leading places organizing underground music shows in Hanoi.

Dee.F attempts to capture its spectrum to codify the unstructured rhythm of being, and is one of the most active artists in the current Vietnamese music scene and has constantly striking his sounds through both solo and his band work – currently with “XAI”, a live techno punk band. Having performed from intimate venues to festivals, Dee.F continuously shapes his artistic expressions through experimental / obscure techno form.

TRI MINH

Since the beginning of 90s, after graduated from Hanoi Conservatory of Music as Excellent in composing degree, Tri Minh, together with some other young musicians started to play Jazz music in various locations in Hanoi. After a period of improvising with Jazz music, Tri Minh has started to explore his territory in electronic music.

Started in 1999, Tri Minh has begun to compose and perform as a solo artist in many location and venue. With its more and more popularity, Tri Minh has established as the first truly electronic artist in Vietnam. As quoted from article printed in local Time magazine: “With a boundless supply of energy and a pronounced lack of preciousness, Minh is pushing ahead with his plans, perhaps someday soon, this self-styled chameleon will develop a profile that is sufficiently visible to suit his talents”.

In addition Tri Minh has, during the recent years, become renowned as an avant-garde musician and sound artist merging electronic, electro sounds and programming with traditional Vietnamese music and lyrics in combination with modern installations and performances. And had perform together or as part of with many international artists from Denmark, UK, US, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and has performed in Barcelona-Spain, Goteborg-Sweden, Copenhagen-Denmark, Cologne, Berlin-Germany, Taipei-Taiwan.

DAO ANH KHANH

Dao Anh Khanh is well known for being one of the leading artists of Vietnamese contemporary art. Additionally, to his achievements in the contemporary arts, he has held many international exhibitions, now spanning fifteen different countries, including the US, UK, France, Switzerland, Spain and China. On many occasions, Dao Anh Khanh and his works are featured on world recognisable channels and magazines such as The BBC, Discovery Channel, NHK and The New York Times. He was also promoted by Asia Art magazine as the most active artist, The Word Magazine voted him as ‘Man of the Year in 2010’ as part of 1000 years celebration of Hanoi birth.

Beside known as an artist in fine art, he is also renowned as a vocal artist and performance artist. All his performances have free style, with no limitation, which he is proud of that he can sing in all style.

NGUYEN DO MINH QUAN

Nguyen Do Minh Quan is a Vietnamese experimental electronic musician. Quan was born in Hanoi in May 1990. He started to play music as a self taught guitarist when he was 11, then played in a few rock/metal bands called Nuranium, Thrasher…In 2012 he started his home studio and did sound engineering/recording for a Vietnamese Post-punk rock band called Go Lim.

In 2013, he began to experiment his music with more improvised sound and ideas, then changed to electronic music and played electronic hardware like drum machine, synthesizer, computer software like ableton etc…He has also performed in some live electronic performances, from experimental sound art to live techno music. Quan mostly improvises music and it is never be the same, as he tries to bring the imagination of the world inside his mind, as well as his curiosity and view points to people through musical ideas and different sound materials. Quan produces electronic music including contemporary sound art, techno music, sound design for film…

Quan started to join in Dom Dom experimental music group, hosted by experimental music artist Tran Kim Ngoc, in which he has played improvised experimental music besides different musicians playing from jazz, classical music to traditional music. He performed at “Hanoi New Music Meeting” – an international experimental contemporary music festival in late 2013 and then “Hanoi Sound Stuff Festival” in 2014.

NGUYEN HONG NHUNG

One of the more confounding descriptors that have accompanied Nhung’s work so far is the word “dark.” While I can hear underpinnings of that when her noisy side comes out, her compositions feel much more ethereal and weightless to me.
