Can Tho (VNA) – Building the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho into a trade-services hub in the southwestern region was featured at a seminar on December 31.

Le Van Tam, permanent Deputy Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, reported that the city recorded a high economic growth over recent years, with total goods and services retails value for 2010-2015 hit nearly 321 trillion VND (14.5 billion USD), a triple-fold increase from 2006-2010.

Pham Huu Hong Thai, Vice Rector of the University of Finance-Marketing, said the Can Tho economy grew by over 12 percent this year. However, almost local businesses are operating on small and medium scale due to insufficient workforce, capital and limited technology and infrastructure.

He suggested Can Tho learn from models adopted by major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and other developed countries.

Trinh Xuan Thang from the Academy of Politics of Region IV called for investing in infrastructure, accelerating trade promotion and providing support to improve corporate competitiveness.-VNA
