Co To Island, a popular tourist site in the northern province of Quang Ninh, has seen electricity outages over the past three days after the power system was struck by lightning.

Chairman of the Co To District People’s Committee, Tran Nhu Long said on Wednesday that the problem occurred on June 18 when the 22KV distribution system was struck by lightning in Ba Mun Islet.

The incident has caused power cuts across the whole of Co To Island District and five communes of the neighbouring Van Don Island District.

“Electricity workers have been sent to fix the problem but due to difficult terrain and unfavourable weather, only five communes in the Van Don Island District had power restored by the afternoon of June 19,” Long said.

Meanwhile, Co To Island may experience power cuts for several more days, he said, adding that local hotels, firms and agencies should try to arrange power generating systems to ensure normal operations.
