The volume of industrial solid waste discharged daily is estimated at
over 13,000 tonnes across Vietnam, according to the Vietnam Government
Portal (VGP).

The majority of industrial waste mainly comes
from light, chemical and metallurgy industries; craft villages; and
illegal imported scraps.

Police of northern Hai Phong city said
they have discovered nearly 2,300 containers containing 37,000 tonnes of
lead batteries illegally imported at the city’s seaport from 2003 to
2006.

Between 2008 and 2009, they also detected other 340 containers of waste, lead battery scraps, and microelectronics.

Illegally
imported scraps are attributed to the lack of comprehensive legal
system. Meanwhile, industrial waste keeps rising but collection and
treatment efforts have failed to meet the requirements.

In
addition, industrial establishments have not paid due attention to the
collection and treatment of industrial solid waste and treatment
technologies.

Treatment facilities are scattered, thus management has not been efficient.-VNA
