Georges Bizet’s acclaimed opera “Carmen” will be performed for the first time in Vietnam at the Saigon Opera House on July 1 and 2, organizers said Thursday.
“Carmen” is a story of love, jealousy and freedom. On stage, there will be soloists from Vietnam, France, Thailand and South Korea. Vietnamese mezzo-soprano Thanh Huyen will star as Carmen and French tenor Patrick Garayt as Don José.
The orchestra will be conducted by Carlos Dourthé, musical director of the Choir and Orchestra of Paris’ Universities, with soloists from the French National Orchestra. Brian Riedlinger, who has led the International Choir and Orchestra of Ho Chi Minh City since 2006, is responsible for artistic direction.
The performers will sing in French but the dialogues will be in English.
The event is organized by the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music, the French Institute in Vietnam and Lys Events. Tickets are available at Caravelle Saigon Hotel, Lam Son Square, District 1.
